Chain stores shuttered in the first half of 2021.

The Local Data Company reports that a net 5251 chain stores closed in the first six months of 2021.

Commercial Property Advisors (CPA), which specialises in reducing business rates, calls for an immediate imposition of a digital sales tax, to finance a radical face-lift for the high street.

CPA adds that online behemoths can easily afford this sales tax, and government should not assume that, without such help, traditional retailers will be able to cough up their business rates indefinitely.

Shuttered stores scar any attempts by neighbouring businesses to promote a bright and colourful image, argues CPA; furthermore, business rates should be closely aligned to sales, not used to club struggling firms around the head.

CPA is keen to help and advise any businesses seeking to reduce the burden of non-domestic rates, and will happily take charge of the complexities involved in a formal challenge and appeal.
